California Truth And Healing

Resourcing California Native American tribes in truth-telling, cultural healing, and repair.

Our California Truth and Healing Fund (CATH) supports California Native American tribes and Native-led organizations advancing truth, healing, and repair across the state. Operating independently from but complementary to the state's Truth & Healing Council, our fund prioritizes tribal-led advocacy, cultural healing practices, and capacity-building efforts that document histories and correct historical records. Through grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, we empower Native communities to shape their narratives, heal from historical trauma, and build coalitions that hold public institutions accountable for lasting change.

FAQ

  • Who is this fund for?

Open to California Native American Tribes, including federally recognized and non-recognized Tribes (the latter through 501(c)(3) status or fiscal sponsorship). Also available to Native American-led nonprofits, coalitions, or projects with majority Native leadership serving California Native communities. All non-Tribal applicants must provide letters of support from affiliated Tribes or tribal references.

  • Who manages this fund - and how are funding decisions made?

The California Truth and Healing Fund is funded and managed by Decolonizing Wealth Project, dedicated to disrupting the systems of moving and controlling capital through education, radical reparative giving, and narrative change. This fund operates independently of the State of California and funding decisions will be guided by an advisory board of California Native Americans selected by Decolonizing Wealth Project.

  • What can the grant be used for?

Funding must be used for charitable purposes (no lobbying) and cannot be used for efforts in opposition to other tribes or tribal entities.

Funding priorities of the California Truth and Healing Fund are listed below and will shift over time as the work progresses. Current funding priority will be given to activities that advance truth and healing efforts for California Native communities, utilizing the following strategies: capacity-building & technical assistance, advocacy and movement-building, and healing.

Please review the RFP for full details.

  • Is this Fund solely for California Native people to attend the California Truth and Healing Council meetings?

In part. The goals of the California Truth and Healing Fund are to support the engagement of California Native American families, communities, tribes and organizations in the healing opportunities presented in the California Truth and Healing process established by Executive Order N-15-19 and advance the broader objectives of the Council, including to galvanize philanthropy to support the recommendations from the Council’s report. While engagement with the council meetings is a priority, there are also other focal areas. To fully maximize the process, California Native Tribes and Native-led organizations require adequate resources to actively participate in the state’s initiatives—both to inform and shape them, and to ensure the government remains accountable for its commitments to Native communities. Additionally, there is a vital opportunity for these Tribes and organizations to collaborate and coordinate efforts focused on truth, healing, and repair across the state, advocating for reparative actions at the state level.

  • How much can we apply for?

Awards will likely range from $5,000 to $50,000.
